A national park on the southwest side of Provo: a shallow lagoon the colour of a swimming pool, scattered with tiny rocky cays. You will want to stop every few hundred metres.
The drive
Chalk Sound Drive follows the rim of the lagoon, with pull-offs where the water opens up. It is paved the whole way, so this is the one to do with the top off and nowhere to be.
When to go
Around midday, when the sun is high, the water turns its brightest. Late afternoon is softer and quieter.
Make a loop of it
Sapodilla Bay and Taylor Bay sit right next door, both calm and shallow. Above Sapodilla Bay, a short climb leads to rock carvings left by sailors long ago.
Good to know
Much of the shoreline is private. Stick to the public pull-offs and beaches, and take your rubbish with you.
